Even though Sheep Creek Water Company provides water for customers in its service area, streetlights, parks and rec, and waste management are under the umbrella of PPHCSD. Unfortunately most of news from the CSD is sent out in water bills, so Sheep Creek customers don’t always hear what’s happening.
If you are a Sheep Creek customer, you may have heard that the way you deal with trash is changing this year. Originally, PPHCSD was going to get rid of dump cards and force everyone in the service area to sign up for service, but after community feedback they have changed their minds. However, change is still coming to Phelan!
If you currently have trash bin service with CR&R, your monthly rates are going up from $30.98 per month to between $49 and $52 per month. The cost of dumpster service will also be going up. As part of that rate increase, CR&R will be providing three service bins – one for trash, one for recycling, and one for organic materials. And they will be checking that you put the correct stuff in the correct bin. You can be fined for getting it wrong too many times!
If you currently self-haul waste to the transfer station, you can continue to do that. However, you will need to separate your waste into trash/recycling/organics, and you will have to sign up for a permit with PPHCSD. You will also have to take your trash to the dump every two weeks. Basically, you will have to get a permit from the CSD, or sign up with CR&R for service.
The good news – dump cards are still a thing, and everyone will receive their dump cards as normal in June. The bad news – the cost of dump cards is going to go up.
There will be a protest election for the rate increase, if more than 50% of the community says no than CR&R and the CSD will not be able to raise the rates. Look for a mailing on that in April.
Last but not least, PPHCSD is hosting several info meetings about trash service. The next meeting is scheduled for March 16 at 7PM, at the PPHCSD meeting room in Phelan. There was an info meeting in late January, and they posted video of that to Youtube:
